Hybrid Car

As you may know from this blog, I have been getting out on the road more often over the past couple of months. I have been feeling good, and this has led to some recent adventures, including trips to both the Nixon and Reagan libraries here in Southern California, and outings on my boat Solutions every Friday.

I recently bought a new car and I think it will make my outings even more enjoyable. I have been a fan of the Ford Motor Company for many years, and have owned a number of their cars over the years.

I have been curious about hybrid drivetrains for some time, and I recently had the opportunity to buy a car with this option. It’s a Lincoln MKZ, and so far it is performing well.

The car can attain a speed of a little over 45 miles per hour in pure electric mode and maintain that speed for up to two miles — both better numbers than the Toyota Prius. While the car doesn’t match the Prius’ EPA gas average mileage figure of 50 mpg, it does pretty good with 41 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. Definitely an improvement over my previous Lincoln.

I’ll provide you with a full review of the car after I have had it for a while.

    Hi Dr. B.,
Always good fro me to catch up on your happenings via the blog.
In June I took delivery of a Nissan Leaf, all-electric car. I’m impressed by the engineering that’s gone into the car. It’s much smaller than your Ford, though it will seat 5. Living in Oregon it fit’s our driving habits to a tee. The car has a practical range of about 90 miles. Again, it fits our driving habits. I figured that it’s equivalent to 140 mpg based on $0.10/KwH and gas priced at $3.50/gallon. I’m looking forward to a charging infrastructure being put in along the highways. This winter I am finding that heating and defrosting does take a toll on the mileage.

    Thanks for all you’ve done.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Dave: Are you still up in Oregon and living in a log cabin? I’m impressed with your toughing it out in the boondocks. I remember how fun it was riding around in your electric car. I wish I could do that again. — Bob
